Advocacy, Awareness & Support for the Tourism Industry

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has been one of the most severe humanitarian and economic crises in the past century. Affecting people and industries across the globe, it triggered an unprecedented global economic slowdown. The tourism sector, encompassing hospitality, transportation, food and beverage services, and related businesses, was hit particularly hard. As one of the largest service industries, tourism creates opportunities for small and medium enterprises and provides employment to a wide range of workers—from skilled professionals to daily wage earners. The complete shutdown of tourism led to immense losses, particularly in developing and underdeveloped economies like India.

In response to the crisis, the Association of Tourism Service Providers of Bengal (ATSPB) organized a symbolic demonstration on 1st September 2020 at 12 Noon in front of Victoria Memorial Hall, Kolkata. The event highlighted the struggles faced by travel agents, tour operators, hoteliers, and others directly or indirectly associated with tourism. Through this initiative, ATSPB shared a strong message of readiness and safety, assuring tourists and stakeholders that the industry was fully prepared to resume operations responsibly. The program also aimed to urge the government to support the sector through awareness campaigns and recovery efforts. Members were encouraged to participate actively and amplify the message across social media platforms.

Furthermore, on 15th July 2022, ATSPB held a press conference at Press Club Kolkata in collaboration with leading tourism bodies such as TAAB, EIHTAA, and ETAA. The meet was organized to protest against a misleading report published by a leading Bengali daily that falsely blamed the tourism sector for spreading COVID-19. The press meet aimed to clarify facts and defend the reputation of the industry, emphasizing its commitment to safety and responsible operations.
